Bangladesh Railway is set to strengthen its operational capacity by importing 200 broad-gauge coaches from India. Bangladesh Railway Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam announced this decision in the national Parliament on April 9, 2026. This procurement project aims to modernize the railway network and address the current shortage of coaches and engines affecting train schedules across the neighboring country.

Key details of the procurement project and timeline
The supply of these 200 broad-gauge coaches is expected to begin within 2026. According to official plans, the entire fleet will be integrated into Bangladesh Railway between June 2026 and December 2027. The project receives financial backing from the European Investment Bank (EIB). This addition is part of a larger modernization effort that includes future plans for 260 more broad-gauge passenger coaches and several new locomotives to boost freight revenue.
How will these new coaches impact train services?
The arrival of new coaches will allow Bangladesh Railway to introduce new train routes and increase the frequency of intercity trains. Special focus will be given to improving connectivity between Dhaka and the northern districts of the country. These additions are critical as the railway currently faces challenges such as the suspension of several mail and local trains in the western zone due to a lack of operational manpower and equipment. The new coaches will help reduce daily delays for freight trains and improve passenger comfort.
