North Western Railway has reached a significant milestone by completing electrification on nearly 99 percent of its broad gauge network in the Rajasthan region. The project has successfully covered 5549 kilometers of track, marking a major step toward modernizing the rail infrastructure. This shift is designed to increase train speeds while significantly reducing the operational dependence on diesel fuel. According to official reports, the move supports the broader mission of creating a green railway network across India.
Key updates on the Rajasthan rail electrification project
- Total route length electrified stands at 5549 kilometers as of April 2026
- The remaining 10 kilometer stretch between Arnia Khurd and Lalsot is scheduled for completion by June 2026
- Electric locomotive trials on the Dausa-Gangapur City section were successful with speeds reaching 80 km/h
- Currently 78 percent of passenger trains and 61 percent of goods trains in the zone run on electric traction
Operational impact and environmental benefits
The transition to electric engines has helped the North Western Railway improve its punctuality and overall efficiency. General Manager Amitabh shared that the zone utilized its entire allocated budget and recorded a historic revenue of 8622 crore rupees during the last financial period. Officials mention that lower diesel consumption will result in massive savings on fuel costs and a visible reduction in carbon emissions. This development ensures that most trains in the region now operate with better speed and reliability for daily commuters.
