The Safdarjung Railway Station in Delhi is undergoing a massive transformation to become a world-class transit hub under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. This redevelopment project involves an investment of approximately 385 crore rupees and aims to provide facilities comparable to major international airports. Once completed, the station will serve as a multi-modal transport center, significantly reducing the passenger pressure on Hazrat Nizamuddin station.
What modern facilities will be available at Safdarjung Station?
The new station is being developed as an air-conditioned seven-story building that will offer a variety of commercial and passenger amenities. It will include a dedicated shopping area and a multiplex, allowing passengers to utilize their waiting time productively. The design features separate entry and exit points to ensure a smooth flow of travelers, similar to the systems found at airports.
The complex will also function as a commercial center with around 2,200 office units. For the convenience of all passengers, special facilities for Divyangjan are being integrated into the structure. The project also emphasizes sustainability by including solar-powered energy-efficient lamps and a comprehensive rainwater harvesting system. Improved approach roads and a modern departure plaza canopy are also part of the design.
Current progress and expected completion date
According to Northern Railway officials, the project is progressing in phases with different structures at various stages of completion. The Signal and Telecom building has already been finished and is currently operational. While the main station building is in its final finishing stage, the structural work for the operational building has also been successfully completed.
Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) and IRCON International are the primary agencies executing this redevelopment. Construction of the air concourse foundation and pillars is finished, and the launching of girders is currently underway. The entire facility is expected to be fully ready and functional by mid-2026. This redevelopment is part of a broader plan by the Ministry of Railways to modernize 13 stations across Delhi.
