The Central and Bihar governments have approved a major rail bypass project for Bhagalpur to improve train operations and reduce congestion in the region. This 13.38-kilometer-long project is estimated to cost around 303.20 crore rupees and aims to benefit both urban and rural areas. The bypass will connect Gonudham Halt on the Barahat-Bhagalpur section to Sabour Station on the Bhagalpur-Sahibganj section.
Key Features of the Bhagalpur Rail Bypass Project
- Project Length: The total length of the new rail bypass is 13.38 kilometers.
- Total Budget: The Ministry of Railways has estimated a cost of 303.20 crore rupees for construction.
- Route Connectivity: It will link Gonudham Halt directly with Sabour Station, bypassing the main junction for specific routes.
- Approval Date: Official records indicate the project received its final nod around March 24-26, 2026.
- Executing Agency: Eastern Railway will be responsible for the development and execution of this bypass line.
Major Benefits for Passengers and Local Economy
One of the primary advantages of this bypass is the reduction of traffic pressure at Bhagalpur Junction. Currently, the Barahat-Bhagalpur section operates at over 125 percent of its actual capacity. By diverting trains through the bypass, the main station will see less congestion and improved punctuality for all services. Additionally, the need for engine reversal at Bhagalpur Junction will be eliminated for many trains, which will save significant operational time.
The project is also expected to boost local development. Sabour station is already being modernized under the Amrit Bharat scheme, and this bypass will further enhance its importance. Better connectivity to religious sites like Gonudham will likely increase tourism and create new employment opportunities for the local population. It will facilitate smoother movement for both passenger and freight trains, aiding the overall economic growth of Bhagalpur.
