Bhagalpur station is moving towards a major upgrade with the finalization of the design for a new two-story modular waiting hall. Eastern Railway General Manager Milind Deouskar is scheduled to visit the station on February 12, 2026, to inspect the proposed site and provide the final approval for construction. The map for this facility was prepared following a detailed drone survey by RITES to ensure efficient crowd management for the thousands of daily passengers.

What facilities will be available in the new holding area?
The new permanent holding area will be built on a 3,000 square meter plot located in front of the reservation booking center. This two-story building is designed to handle the heavy rush during festivals like Holi and Chhath Puja. It will include general ticket counters, modern toilets, electronic train display boards, and extensive seating arrangements. A new Foot-Over Bridge will be constructed to connect this hall directly to the platforms, allowing for a smoother flow of traffic. To further reduce platform congestion, a separate entry point will be created specifically for passengers who already have reserved tickets.
Key project details and infrastructure upgrades
The Railway Board has included Bhagalpur among 76 stations nationwide to receive these permanent modular holding areas. Along with the new hall, several other infrastructure improvements are planned for the station. The project aims to address the current issues of narrow platforms and staircase congestion. Work is expected to accelerate after the Holi festival, focusing on the following areas:
| Project Component | Details |
|---|---|
| Total Budget | Approximately ₹50 crore |
| Land Area | 3,000 square meters |
| Building Structure | Two-story modular design |
| Technical Agency | RITES (Rail India Technical and Economic Services) |
| Platform Upgrades | Expansion for 24-coach trains and wider FOB stairs |
As the permanent building will take time to complete, the railway administration will use temporary holding areas to manage the extra 35,000 passengers expected during the upcoming Holi rush. Once the permanent facility is ready, entry will be strictly allowed only for passengers holding valid tickets.
