Bhagalpur is set for a major traffic overhaul as the authorities prepare to decide on the future of the Zero Mile flyover. Based on the Detailed Project Report (DPR) being prepared at the headquarters level, the existing structure will either be expanded to a four-lane flyover or a new two-lane flyover will be constructed alongside it. This project, coupled with the ongoing construction of the parallel bridge to Vikramshila Setu, aims to eliminate chronic traffic congestion in the city by 2028. The final decision will be taken once the ministry approves the technical reports.

What are the key infrastructure and railway projects planned for Bhagalpur?

The infrastructure plan includes a new four-lane road from Naugachia to Chaudharidih to improve connectivity. Indian Railways has also approved a 13.38 km long Bhagalpur Bypass connecting Gonudham Halt to Sabour, costing approximately ₹303.20 crore. This bypass will significantly reduce the load on Bhagalpur Junction and improve train operations. Additionally, new traffic check posts are being established at Zero Mile, Manali, Kachhari, and Gurhatta Chowk to manage vehicle flow more effectively and reduce daily jams.

Estimated Costs and Timelines for Major Connectivity Works

Several road projects are currently in different stages of planning and execution. The 9-kilometer stretch from Naugachia Zero Mile to Jahnavi Chowk is estimated at ₹295 crore, while the 4.5-kilometer road from Barari Bypass to Chaudharidih will cost ₹111 crore. The authorities have also planned an embankment construction at Mahadevpur Ghat to protect the infrastructure from floods. The parallel four-lane bridge to Vikramshila Setu is expected to be completed by 2028, providing a permanent solution to the transport woes between Bhagalpur and Naugachia.
