Delhi-Meerut RRTS Full Launch on Feb 22, Meerut Metro to Run at 120 kmph Matching Airport Line Speed

The long wait for daily commuters traveling between Delhi and Meerut is finally coming to an end. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to flag off the complete 82-km Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) on Sunday, February 22, 2026. This launch marks the full operation of the corridor, connecting the major Sarai Kale Khan hub in Delhi all the way to Modipuram in Meerut. The project features both the high-speed Namo Bharat trains and the local Meerut Metro running on the same infrastructure.

How fast will the trains run compared to Delhi Metro?

One of the biggest highlights of this project is the speed. The local Meerut Metro is designed to operate at a maximum speed of 120 kmph. This matches the speed of the Delhi Metro Airport Express Line, which is currently known as the fastest metro connection in the capital. This makes the Meerut Metro the fastest local metro system in the country.

Alongside the metro, the regional Namo Bharat trains will run even faster. These trains operate at 160 kmph, significantly outpacing any existing metro corridor in India. This dual-speed system ensures that both local and regional passengers reach their destinations in record time.

What are the travel timings and ticket prices?

During a recent trial run on Friday, a non-stop Namo Bharat train completed the journey from Sarai Kale Khan to Begumpul in just 40 minutes. For regular service with all planned stops, the full 82-km trip will take approximately 58 minutes. This is a massive improvement over road travel, which often takes hours due to congestion.

Ticket Pricing Structure:

Class Price Range
Standard Class ₹20 to ₹150
Premium Class ₹30 to ₹225

Officials have stated that passengers can use a single ticket for both Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro services. Tickets can be purchased via QR codes, the NCRTC mobile app, or the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC).

What facilities can passengers expect?

The Sarai Kale Khan station acts as a major multimodal hub. It connects passengers to the Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, the Pink Line Metro, and the ISBT via a foot overbridge equipped with travelators. This ensures seamless movement for travelers coming from different parts of the city.

For those looking for extra comfort, the first coach of every Namo Bharat train is a Premium coach. It features reclining seats, charging ports, and extra legroom. However, Premium Class passengers must validate their tickets twice—once at the concourse and again at the platform level to access the boarding lounge.
