The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) achieved a major milestone in the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor project. A successful electric locomotive trial was conducted on the 30-km Vaitarna–New Kharbao section on November 30, 2025. This development is part of the final push to connect the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) with the wider freight network, which will help in moving containers faster from India’s largest port.

What are the key details of the recent locomotive trials
The project has seen two significant trial runs recently to test the readiness of the tracks. These trials ensure that the infrastructure is capable of handling heavy freight loads at high speeds. The details of these trials are as follows:
- Electric Locomotive Trial: Conducted on November 30, 2025, covering the 30-km stretch between Vaitarna and New Kharbao.
- Diesel Locomotive Trial: Successfully completed on October 29, 2025, between New Saphale and IR Kharbao Station.
- Official Presence: The diesel trial was virtually flagged off by Praveen Kumar, Managing Director of DFCCIL.
- Executing Agencies: The work involved collaboration between Tata Projects, L&T, and KPIL.
When will the JNPT section become fully operational
The rail connectivity between Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) is expected to be fully functional by March 2026. Currently, only about 72 km of the final stretch remains to be operationalized. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw mentioned that these trials bring the department closer to doubling freight capacity. The WDFC has already shown great progress, recording a high of 200 freight trains in a single day during November 2025. Once the JNPT link is complete, it will significantly reduce the time taken to transport goods from the coast to northern India.
