Indian Railways has introduced a major relief for passengers holding counter tickets by changing the old cancellation rules. Under this new policy, passengers no longer need to return to the originating station or the booking zone to cancel their tickets. This facility allows travelers to cancel their PRS counter tickets from any computerized reservation center across the country regardless of where the journey begins.

How does the new counter ticket cancellation system work?
The railway administration is rolling out this facility across all Passenger Reservation System counters between April 1 and April 15, 2026. Passengers can now approach the nearest station in any city to submit their original counter ticket for cancellation. The refund is processed through a centralized cloud-based system that ensures the transaction is recorded instantly. This move by the Ministry of Railways is designed to save time and travel costs for millions of passengers who previously faced difficulties in reaching specific stations for refunds. Official reports confirm that the system is already becoming active at major stations across the national network.
Important rules and refund timelines for cancellation
While the cancellation can happen anywhere, certain conditions regarding the original ticket and timing must be followed by the passengers. The refund amount is strictly based on the time remaining before the train departure as per the standard railway slabs.
- The original physical ticket must be surrendered at the PRS counter to receive the refund.
- A flat cancellation charge is deducted if the ticket is cancelled more than 72 hours before departure.
- A 25 percent deduction applies for cancellations made between 72 and 24 hours before the journey.
- A 50 percent deduction is charged for cancellations between 24 and 8 hours before the scheduled departure.
- No refund is issued if the confirmed ticket is cancelled less than 8 hours before the train starts.
- Passengers can also initiate cancellation via the 139 helpline or IRCTC website but must visit a counter to collect the cash refund.
