Engine Less Train in India

If you have traveled by train, you are familiar with the engine that typically leads the journey, responsible for pulling the entire train. However, an innovative development in Indian railways is the introduction of the first engine-less train, which has gained tremendous popularity across various states. This engineless train, known as the Vande Bharat Express or Train 18, is designed to compete with well-known services like Rajdhani and Shatabdi Express regarding speed and efficiency.

Speed of Train Without Engine

During its trial runs, the Vande Bharat Express reached impressive speeds of 183 km/h, although operational limitations on the tracks currently cap its maximum speed at 160 km/h. This semi-high-speed train has become a favorite among passengers due to its modern design and performance. The unique feature of not having a separate engine allows it to achieve higher speeds compared to traditional trains, making it a significant advancement in railway technology in India.

How the Train Runs Without an Engine

The Vande Bharat Express operates on an innovative system where the engine is integrated into the train coaches, similar to bullet or metro trains. Built by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, this train utilizes an automated system that allows it to function efficiently without a separate locomotive. While the train is designed for speeds up to 180 km/h, it currently operates at a reduced speed of 130 km/h for safety reasons. Additionally, two locomotive pilots are present onboard to ensure smooth operations.
