The North Central Railway has successfully commissioned the Kavach Automatic Train Protection system on the 190-kilometer section between Prayagraj and Kanpur. This indigenously developed technology was officially implemented on March 22, 2026, marking a significant step for the high-density Delhi-Howrah corridor. The system aims to minimize human error and support high-speed train operations on this vital route.
Safety features and operational benefits of Kavach
Kavach is an Automatic Train Protection system designed to prevent accidents like over-speeding or jumping signals. It automatically applies brakes if the loco pilot fails to react and provides continuous signal updates during dense fog. With this installation, the Prayagraj-Kanpur route is now capable of supporting trains at speeds up to 160 kmph while ensuring a high level of passenger safety.
Trains using Kavach system on this section
In the first phase, the system is operational on eight pairs of trains. These include major services connecting North India to various parts of the country. More services including Vande Bharat trains will be added to this list as the rollout continues under Mission Raftaar.
