Indian Railways has accelerated the groundwork for the Maghar-Sardarnagar bypass rail line on the Gorakhpur-Lucknow main line. This new track is designed to serve as a fourth line, effectively bypassing the busy Gorakhpur Junction to improve train punctuality. The North Eastern Railway has already started clearing bushes and depositing soil at various sites to prepare for the main construction phase as of March 2026.

Project details and infrastructure highlights
- Total Length: The bypass line is planned to be approximately 47.3 kilometers long.
- Estimated Budget: The project has an allocated cost of ₹945 crore.
- No Crossings: To maintain high speed and safety, the entire stretch will have no railway crossings.
- New Bridges: A rail bridge will be built near Khajni where the line crosses the Sahjanwa-Dohrighat route.
- Proposed Halt: A new halt station will be established near Sevaibazar on the Gorakhpur-Varanasi road.
Impact on Gorakhpur Junction and train operations
The primary goal of this bypass is to reduce the heavy traffic load at Gorakhpur Junction, which often leads to operational delays. By diverting around 32 freight trains daily, the railway administration can free up platform space for passenger services. CPRO Pankaj Kumar Singh mentioned that the Detailed Project Report has been sent to the Railway Board for final approval. This project will offer a faster alternative for trains moving towards Lucknow, Varanasi, and Bihar while fostering development in the Maghar region.
