Western Railway has officially announced the introduction of 15-coach local train services on the Virar-Dahanu road section for the first time. This move follows successful trial runs conducted on April 5, 2026, and aims to reduce the heavy passenger rush for commuters traveling between Vasai, Palghar, and Dahanu. The upgrade provides a significant boost to the suburban rail network capacity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and addresses long-standing demands from passenger associations.
Key features of the new 15-coach services
The transition from 12-coach to 15-coach trains is expected to increase passenger carrying capacity by approximately 25 percent per trip. Western Railway plans to upgrade a total of 17 suburban services to this longer format. Two newly built 15-coach rakes have already arrived at the Virar carshed to facilitate these operations. This expansion is essential for the growing population in the extended suburbs.
- Eight services will operate specifically on the Virar-Dahanu section
- Nine services will run on the Churchgate-Virar route
- The project aims to benefit daily commuters from Vasai and Palghar
- Capacity per trip increases by 25 percent
Infrastructure readiness and project timeline
The infrastructure upgrades at Virar station were completed within a record four-month period by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation. These works included extending and widening platforms to accommodate the longer rakes. Commercial operations are expected to begin later this month after the final verification of the trial results. Western Railway officials have confirmed that this is part of a larger plan for capacity enhancement in the suburban section.
