Western Railway has officially upgraded 16 suburban train services from 12-coach to 15-coach rakes to provide relief to daily commuters. This change started on March 19, 2026, and increases the total number of 15-car services on the Western Railway network from 211 to 227. The upgrade is part of a larger plan to manage the heavy passenger load during peak hours in the Mumbai suburban region.

How will the 15-coach upgrade benefit daily passengers?
The transition to 15-coach trains significantly improves the carrying capacity of each service. Each new 15-car local train can accommodate approximately 7,555 passengers, which is a substantial increase compared to the older 12-car rakes. Out of the 16 upgraded services, eight are scheduled to operate specifically during peak morning and evening hours to help reduce overcrowding. This move ensures more space and seating availability for people traveling to work and home.
