Indian Railways is set to transform the rail network in Jharkhand with two major projects aimed at reducing train delays and boosting industrial growth. The Muri-Chandil section will undergo doubling at a cost of 800 crore rupees, while the Union Cabinet has also cleared the 3rd and 4th lines between Gamharia and Chandil with an investment of 1,168 crore rupees. These developments will ensure smoother train operations and provide relief to thousands of daily passengers in the region.
Key details of the Muri-Chandil and Gamharia-Chandil projects
The doubling of the Muri-Chandil section is a long-standing demand of the region. This 800 crore project will help in smoother movement of both passenger and goods trains, ending the issue of frequent delays. Fund allocation for this specific work is expected to be finalized by April 2026. Additionally, the Gamharia-Chandil multi-tracking project will add two more lines to increase track capacity significantly. The official approval for these lines came from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs led by the Prime Minister.

Expected benefits for Jharkhand rail passengers and industries
These projects are part of a larger railway expansion plan approved under the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan. The new lines will improve connectivity to tourist spots like the Chandil Dam and Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary. It will also help industries and mines transport goods more efficiently by adding about 52 million tonnes of freight capacity per annum. The project is expected to be completed by 2030-31 and will generate around 18 lakh human-days of employment during construction. It will also contribute to environmental goals by reducing carbon emissions and oil imports.
