The North Western Railway (NWR) has started the construction of 20 new pit lines to strengthen its maintenance network and improve rail operations. This project is a major step toward increasing the capacity to handle more trains within the zone. With these new facilities, the railway aims to speed up the technical check-ups and cleaning of train rakes, which will eventually allow for the introduction of new train services on various routes.
Station wise distribution of new pit lines
The construction work is being executed under a mission-mode approach to ensure timely completion. Currently, NWR has 22 pit lines for primary maintenance, and with the addition of these 20 new lines, the total count will reach 42. This effectively doubles the maintenance capacity of the zone. The project focuses on key stations to balance the workload across the network.
| Station Name | Number of New Pit Lines |
|---|---|
| Khatipura | 4 |
| Lalgarh | 4 |
| Umra | 2 |
| Sriganganagar | 2 |
| Hisar | 2 |
| Suratgarh | 2 |
| Jaisalmer | 2 |
| Madar | 1 |
| Barmer | 1 |
How will this impact daily rail travel?
According to Amit Sudarshan, CPRO of NWR, the expansion of maintenance infrastructure is essential for better train connectivity. More pit lines mean that trains can be prepared for their next journey much faster, reducing delays. This infrastructure growth is expected to provide passengers with better facilities and more travel options as the path for new train launches becomes clear. High-level monitoring is being done to track the progress of these projects. General Manager Amitabh also mentioned that strengthening maintenance is a priority for increasing operational efficiency in the coming years.
