QR Code System for Identifying Vendors Enhances Safety and Transparency for Train Passengers in India.

Introduction of QR Code for Vendor Identification

Lakhs of illegal vendors operating on coaches and platforms pose significant risks to the health and safety of railway passengers in India. To address this issue, Indian Railways is implementing a system that allows passengers to identify legitimate vendors using their smartphones. A mandatory identity card featuring a QR code will be issued to the vendors and their assistants working for all catering contractors. By scanning the QR code, passengers will access comprehensive information, including the vendor’s name, address, Aadhaar number, mobile number, and details about the licensed contractor and company.

Pilot Project Implementation

As part of a pilot project, QR code-based identity cards have been issued to 835 vendors who are assistants of Railway Board contractors, specifically in the Nagpur Division of Central Railway. These identity cards contain essential documents such as the vendor’s photo, the date of police verification, a health fitness certificate, and the contract period. Additionally, the agreement documents between the contractor and the vendor are accessible through the QR code, enhancing the transparency of vendor operations within the rail system.

Enhanced Security and Monitoring

The introduction of the QR code-based Vendor Management System (VMS) is expected to assist Railway Protection Force (RPF), Government Railway Police (GRP), Ticket Checking Inspectors (TTE), and commercial department officials in identifying and apprehending illegal vendors. When passengers scan the QR code, they will receive complete details about the vendor and the associated contractor’s company, facilitating better security and monitoring of vendor activities on trains and platforms.
