The Ministry of Railways shared a major update on April 6, 2026, regarding the Vijayawada-Kazipet third rail line project. Out of the total 219 km planned, 199 km of the track has now been commissioned along with electrification. This work is part of a larger plan by South Central Railway to improve train movement on the busy Grand Trunk Route connecting South and North India.

Only a small portion of about 20 km remains to be finished between Dornakal and Mahabubabad. The total cost of the work is estimated at around 3,103.99 crore rupees.
