The Ministry of Railways shared a major update on April 6, 2026, regarding the Vijayawada-Kazipet third rail line project. Out of the total 219 km planned, 199 km of the track has now been commissioned along with electrification. This work is part of a larger plan by South Central Railway to improve train movement on the busy Grand Trunk Route connecting South and North India.
How this project will help common passengers and industries?
The new third line is expected to solve the problem of heavy traffic on the existing tracks. Passengers will likely see fewer delays as the extra track allows for better train handling and higher capacity. For the industrial sector, this route is very important for moving coal and cement across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Smooth movement of these goods helps the regional economy and ensures that essential materials reach their destination on time.
Important details and current status of the project
The project covers 184 km in Telangana and 35 km in Andhra Pradesh. With 194.57 km of new tracks added by South Central Railway in the current financial year, this section is a key part of their infrastructure growth. Only a small portion of about 20 km remains to be finished between Dornakal and Mahabubabad. The total cost of the work is estimated at around 3,103.99 crore rupees.
