Western Dedicated Freight Corridor: Final section trial successful, India’s largest freight corridor now fully operational

The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) has achieved full operational readiness after successful trial runs on its final section. On March 31, 2026, the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) announced the completion of the JNPT to New Saphale stretch. This 102 km long section was the last remaining part of the massive 1,506 km freight project. The entire corridor is now ready to handle heavy cargo movement between the northern parts of India and the western ports.

What does the completion of the WDFC mean for transport?

The completion of this corridor provides a dedicated track for goods trains, which will significantly improve the speed of freight movement. Earlier, freight trains had to share tracks with passenger trains, causing delays. Now, with a separate line, cargo can reach ports much faster. The Western corridor links major industrial areas in the north to the busy JNPT port in Maharashtra. This will help in reducing the time it takes to move export and import containers.
