Provision of Linen in AC Coaches

In Indian Railways, passengers traveling in AC coaches are provided with sheets, towels, and blankets as part of their ticket fare. This service is included in the overall cost of the journey, and it aims to enhance the comfort of travelers. However, a recent Right to Information (RTI) query has raised questions about the frequency of washing these items, particularly woolen blankets, which are reportedly washed only once a month, contrary to the claim that all linen is cleaned after each use.

Housekeeping Practices and Concerns

Responses from railway housekeeping staff have revealed concerning practices regarding the washing of blankets. While bed sheets and pillow covers are sent for washing after each journey, blankets are often kept in the coach until they show signs of dirt or odor. Staff members indicated that cleaning protocols are not strictly adhered to, and there is no effective monitoring of the cleanliness of these items. Complaints from passengers are sometimes the only trigger for ensuring that a clean blanket is provided.

Infrastructure and Staffing Issues

Indian Railways operates 46 departmental laundries and 25 boot laundries across the country, where the infrastructure is owned by the Railways, but the staff is employed on a contract basis. Concerns have been raised about the adequacy of the cleaning processes, particularly regarding woolen blankets, which are considered heavy and difficult to wash regularly. This has led to calls for the discontinuation of their use, as the current system appears insufficient to guarantee the cleanliness of these essential items for passengers.
