In India, traveling by train usually requires a valid ticket. However, there is one exceptional train where you can travel completely free of cost without worrying about a ticket or the presence of a TTE (Travel Ticket Examiner).

This unique train has been operating for over 75 years and offers passengers the opportunity to travel without spending a single rupee. Let’s get to know more about this fascinating train.

The Free Train in India

The train in question is the Bhakra-Nangal Train, which runs between Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. This train allows passengers to travel freely without purchasing a ticket. It covers a picturesque route and provides a unique experience for its travelers.

The train operates on a 13-kilometer stretch through the Shivalik Hills and crosses the Sutlej River, offering breathtaking views. It has three compartments and was first introduced in 1948. Since then, it has served countless passengers, with around 800 people traveling on it daily.

Who Operates This Train?

Unlike other trains managed by Indian Railways, the Bhakra-Nangal Train is operated by the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). Initially, it was used to transport workers and materials during the construction of the Bhakra Nangal Dam. Today, it continues to run as a gesture to attract tourists and support local commuting needs.

Even though running the train incurs significant expenses, the BBMB continues to provide this service free of charge. It remains an iconic example of service and a nostalgic reminder of India’s rich history of infrastructure development.

So, if you ever want to enjoy a free train journey in India, the Bhakra-Nangal Train is the one to catch.
