The Indian Railways is set to revolutionize long-distance travel with the launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper trains in January 2025. This new service aims to enhance overnight travel comfort and efficiency across key routes in India.
Key Features and Specifications
- Manufacturing and Design: The sleeper trains are being developed by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and the Rail Coach Factory (RCF). A prototype has already been unveiled, showcasing a fully air-conditioned 16-car configuration that can accommodate over 820 passengers
- Speed and Travel Time: The Vande Bharat Sleeper trains will operate at speeds up to 160 km/h, significantly reducing travel times. For instance, the New Delhi to Srinagar route, covering approximately 800 kilometers, will take less than 13 hours, departing at 7 PM and arriving by 8 AM
- Safety Features: The trains will include advanced safety systems such as the Kavach collision avoidance system, automatic train protection (ATP), and anti-climbing technology to enhance passenger safety during journeys
- Passenger Amenities: Enhanced amenities will include:
- Sensor-activated interconnecting doors
- Touch-free bio-vacuum toilets
- Emergency communication systems
- Comfortable sleeper facilities across three classes: AC First Class, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier
Routes and Connectivity
The initial route for the Vande Bharat Sleeper train will connect New Delhi and Srinagar, with plans for future expansions to other major routes like Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Chennai. Key stops along the New Delhi-Srinagar route will include Ambala Cantt, Ludhiana, Jammu Tawi, and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra
Ticket Pricing
While official ticket prices are yet to be confirmed, preliminary estimates suggest competitive fares:
- Chair Car: Approximately ₹2,000
- AC 2-Tier: Around ₹2,500
- AC First Class: Roughly ₹3,000
Future Plans
In addition to the first sleeper train launching in January 2025, Indian Railways plans to introduce a total of 10 Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets by the end of the fiscal year 2025-26. These additional trains will further expand the network and improve connectivity across various regions
