Today, on January 17, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train in Malda, West Bengal. This train will run between Howrah (Kolkata) and Guwahati (Kamakhya), making travel between eastern and northeastern India faster and more comfortable.
The train is a big step towards modernizing Indian Railways, and it will cover a distance of 958 kilometers in just 14 hours. The Vande Bharat sleeper train can reach a top speed of 180 km/h, which will significantly reduce travel time for passengers.
Besides the train launch, PM Modi will also inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for several railway and road projects worth over ₹3,250 crores. These projects include new railway lines and upgraded facilities in various locations like New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri.
