North Eastern Railway is currently facing a shortage of land for the construction of a dedicated Vande Bharat depot in Gorakhpur and Bhatni. After the rejection of the Sahjanwa proposal by the Railway Board, the administration is now looking for private or state government land to facilitate the project. A new site has been identified at Mahuapar in Bhiti Rawat, where a depot with an estimated cost of 200 crore rupees is expected to be built.

Why is the new Vande Bharat depot necessary?
The existing maintenance facilities in Gorakhpur are reaching their limit as more high-speed trains are introduced on various routes. Currently, the New Washing Pit in Gorakhpur handles the maintenance of two Vande Bharat trains running to Prayagraj and Patliputra. However, the coaching depot has stated it cannot accommodate the maintenance of the third Vande Bharat train on the Gorakhpur-Agra route. A specialized depot is essential because these trains require a washing pit and inspection line at least one kilometer long.
Key details of the Mahuapar land proposal
The railway administration previously surveyed locations such as Maniram, Peppeganj, and Nakaha Jungle, but the land available there was insufficient for the depot requirements. The latest site at Mahuapar in Bhiti Rawat is located strategically between the railway line and the highway. The survey for this location is complete, and the proposal is under review for further approvals. The following table highlights the current status of the project:
