Southern Railway is planning a new Vande Bharat Express train between Chennai and Rameswaram to improve travel options.
Southern Railway is getting ready to launch a Vande Bharat Express train connecting Chennai and Rameswaram. This is happening after the electrification of the 53-km stretch from Ramanathapuram to Rameswaram has been completed.
The Railway Board has received a proposal to start the daytime service, which could depart from Chennai Egmore or Tambaram. The new train aims to ease the crowding on the current overnight trains, as there aren’t any daytime services on this route.
Currently, the distance between Chennai and Rameswaram is about 600-660 km. The new Vande Bharat train should reach Rameswaram within eight hours for passengers to return on the same day. This will make travel more convenient for everyone.
Although the electrification is finished, there is still a 220-meter gap without overhead cables near Uchipuli station. This means that some testing will be needed before the Vande Bharat train can start running.
The final route for the train is still to be confirmed. Right now, there are three daily and four weekly trains operating between Chennai and Rameswaram, including the Sethu Superfast Express and Boat Mail Express.
