Indian Railways has set specific rules for ticket booking and fares for children based on their age. These guidelines help passengers plan their travel and avoid penalties during the journey. The current rules, effective since April 21, 2016, remain applicable for travel in 2025 and 2026.
What are the ticket rules for children under 12 years?
- Children under 5 years: Travel is free if no separate berth or seat is requested. However, if a separate seat is needed, the full adult fare is charged.
- Children aged 5 to 11 years: Half the adult fare is charged if no separate berth is requested (NOSB option). If a separate berth is requested, the full adult fare applies.
- Children aged 12 and above: They are treated as adult passengers and must pay the full fare.
Important guidelines for parents and passengers
Passengers are advised to enter the child’s name during booking, even if the travel is free. This helps the Traveling Ticket Examiner (TTE) identify the child during emergencies. It is also necessary to carry an age proof document such as an Aadhaar card, birth certificate, or school ID to avoid fines.
