The Jodhpur Division of North Western Railway has introduced a new safety mechanism called the Safety Alarm Point Unit (SPAU). This system acts as a strict guard to prevent human errors during train operations. It has been installed across 112 stations to make train movements safer for passengers and staff.

How does the SPAU system work?
The system starts a 3-minute countdown as soon as a train enters a platform. If the track points are not set correctly within this time, a loud audio-visual alarm goes off to alert the staff. Once the train arrives fully, an LED light glows and a buzzer sounds on the Station Master’s panel, which requires a manual acknowledgment.
Where has the system been installed?
The SPAU units are spread across various sections of the Jodhpur Division to ensure maximum coverage. The distribution of these units is as follows:
| Section | Number of Units |
|---|---|
| Samdari-Bhiladi | 22 |
| Raika Bagh-Jaisalmer | 21 |
| Samdari-Munabao | 15 |
| Merta-Phulera | 12 |
| Merta-Bikaner | 12 |
| Degana-Ratangarh | 8 |
| Jodhpur-Merta | 9 |
| Jodhpur-Marwar Junction | 9 |
What are the benefits of this new system?
Karniram, the Additional Divisional Railway Manager (ADRM) of Jodhpur, stated that the system is designed to catch even the smallest negligence at stations. Since it is directly linked with the interlocking and signaling systems, it allows for simultaneous monitoring of tracks and signals. This reduces the risk of accidents during shunting and crossover movements.
