The railway expansion project on the Jamalpur-Bhagalpur route has reached a significant milestone with the completion of a joint survey. This project involves the construction of a third tunnel and the addition of third and fourth lines to increase capacity. The primary goal is to upgrade the track infrastructure to support train speeds of up to 130 kilometers per hour and improve travel efficiency in the region.

Financial Outlay and Technical Upgrades
The total cost for the 52.81 kilometer long third line is estimated at 1094.53 crore rupees. To facilitate high-speed travel, railway authorities are installing W-beam metal safety fencing along the tracks between Kiul and Bhagalpur. The proposed third tunnel, located near the existing ones in the Bariakol area, is designed to be much wider to accommodate two tracks simultaneously. This expansion will separate freight traffic from passenger trains, significantly improving the punctuality of express services in the Malda division.
Land Survey and Acquisition Timeline
The Revenue and Forest departments have identified a land corridor ranging from 50 to 82 feet in width for the project. This survey covered key areas including Nathnagar, Sultanganj, and Bariarpur. While the project will impact approximately 200 houses and private land, the railway plans to issue notices to landowners by early 2026. Construction work is expected to start by the end of 2026 and reach completion within three years. Additionally, the plan includes removing 30 level crossings and replacing them with overbridges and underpasses to ensure smooth rail operations.
