Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) has officially signed a major contract with Spanish manufacturer Talgo to purchase 20 new high-speed trains. This agreement was finalized on February 8, 2026, under the patronage of the Minister of Transport and Logistics Services, Eng. Saleh Al-Jasser. The primary goal of this deal is to increase the annual capacity of the Haramain High-Speed Railway to 30 million passengers to meet the rising demand from pilgrims and tourists.

When will the new trains start operating?
Travelers can expect the delivery of these new trains to begin at the end of 2028. The plan is to have the full fleet operational by the year 2031. This expansion will take the total number of trains in the fleet from the current 35 to 55. The deal also includes a maintenance contract with Talgo valid until 2033 to ensure the trains remain in good condition for daily passengers.
What are the features and capacity of the new trains?
The new trains are designed to handle high passenger volumes efficiently. Each train will consist of 13 cars, including two locomotives and 13 coaches. The total seating capacity per train will be 417 seats. This includes 304 seats in Economy class and 113 seats in Business class. The design also features dedicated spaces for passengers with disabilities and level boarding to make getting on and off the train faster.
