Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw officially inaugurated modern sleeping pod facilities at Guwahati Railway Station on February 9, 2026. This marks the first time such advanced resting infrastructure has been introduced in the Northeast region to support tourists and long-distance travelers. The new facility is managed by GRIHAM, a specialized unit under the Northeast Frontier Railway, and aims to provide high-quality comfort directly within the station premises.
What facilities are available inside the new lounge?
The newly opened facility is situated in a prime area of the station and features a fully air-conditioned lounge. Passengers can choose between secure Single and Double sleeping pods based on their travel requirements. Apart from resting space, there is a multi-cuisine restaurant available exclusively for paid users. Special attention has been given to female passengers with the inclusion of a separate ladies’ powder room for added safety and privacy.
The sleeping pods are equipped with essential amenities for a comfortable stay:
- Individual lighting and ventilation systems for personal comfort.
- Dedicated mobile charging points inside each pod.
- Secure lockers and storage space for luggage.
- Access to clean and hygienic common areas.
How can passengers book these pods?
To use this facility, passengers generally need a valid confirmed or RAC train ticket. The booking process is simple and can be done online via the IRCTC Retiring Room portal or directly at the GRIHAM reception counter at the station. Slots are typically available for durations like 3, 6, 12, or 24 hours. While specific rates depend on the chosen slot, similar facilities usually range from ₹499 to ₹999, making it a budget-friendly alternative to hotels.
