The Ministry of Railways has taken a major step forward for the new rail line in the Mithila-Kosi region. The officials have completed the necessary paperwork and sent the proposal to NITI Aayog for review. This project involves constructing a new 95 km track that will connect Laheriasarai in Darbhanga directly to Saharsa Junction. The estimated budget for this entire infrastructure project is Rs 2,376 crore.

Route Details and Stations

This new railway line is designed to reduce the travel distance between Darbhanga and Saharsa by approximately 75 km. At present, passengers have to travel a longer route via Samastipur and Khagaria. The track will pass through flood-prone areas, providing better connectivity to the local population. The plan includes the construction of 10 crossing stations and 2 halts along the route.

The proposed stations on this route include:

  • Laheriasarai, Dekuli, Ughra, Khaira
  • Bithauli, Shankarrohar, Hawidih, Sajanpur
  • Kanhauli, Jagdishpur, Ghanshyampur, Kirtipur
  • Jamalpur, Mahishi, Bangaon, Saharsa Junction

Project Infrastructure and Approval Status

The construction plan features significant engineering works to manage the terrain. There will be one high-level bridge over the Kosi River, along with 14 major bridges and 41 minor bridges. To ensure that road traffic is not disturbed, 72 underpasses are also part of the design. This infrastructure will connect the West Bengal and Northeast regions through an alternative route.

MP Gopalji Thakur mentioned that the project is currently in the appraisal stage at NITI Aayog. Once they provide ‘In-principle’ approval, the file will move to the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs for the final financial sanction. The official process for acquiring land will start only after the project receives this final approval and gets an entry in the railway’s Pink Book.
