Indian Railways has successfully completed the re-girdering work on the old Yamuna Bridge in Prayagraj. This essential infrastructure project was carried out to strengthen the bridge and improve safety for passengers. CPRO Shashikant Tripathi confirmed that the maintenance focused on replacing heavy old girders at the Gau Ghat end of the structure. This update ensures smoother operations on the critical Delhi-Howrah rail corridor.
How was the re-girdering process executed?
The work was scheduled between March 27 and March 29, 2026, requiring a temporary closure of the bridge road section. The engineering team used heavy road cranes to manage the replacement of two major girders. On the first day, the placement of the primary girder was finalized. The second phase involved launching the next girder on Saturday. The final day was dedicated to finishing tasks and clearing the site for normal traffic.
What are the key highlights of this railway update?
- Speed enhancement: The new girders allow trains to maintain higher speeds on the Delhi-Howrah main line.
- Safety standards: Replacing century-old components reduces the risk of structural failure.
- Alternative routes: Commuters were advised to use the new Yamuna Bridge during the road closure period.
- Future planning: A new double-deck bridge is already proposed to replace the 150-year-old structure before 2031.
