The Malda Division of Eastern Railway has taken strict action to improve safety on the Bhagalpur-Dumka rail section. On February 7 and 8, 2026, the administration permanently closed seven unauthorized crossings that locals were using to cross the tracks. Railway officials used JCB machines to dig deep trenches on the approach roads and installed strong fencing to stop vehicles from passing through. This step is crucial to prevent accidents involving high-speed trains like the Vande Bharat Express.
Where were these crossings closed?
The operation targeted specific areas where people were frequently crossing the tracks with four-wheelers despite the risks. The engineering department focused on the stretch between Bhagalpur and Dumka to secure the line. The closed crossings include two spots between Tikani and Dhauni, four locations between Dhauni and Barahat, and two more between Barahat and Mandarhill. Along with closing the roads, the team also removed six unauthorized shacks near the Dhauni-Barahat line to clear the area for better visibility and safety.
Fines and new facilities for villagers
Crossing railway tracks at unauthorized places is a punishable offense under Section 147 of the Indian Railways Act. Anyone caught violating this rule can face a fine of up to Rs 1,000 or imprisonment for up to six months. The administration has made it clear that where underpasses exist, level crossings must be closed. However, to help the local villagers, the Malda Division confirmed that tenders for constructing two Low Height Subways (LHS) have already been approved. These subways will soon provide a safe and legal passage for people and vehicles.
