Mumbai’s suburban railway network is gearing up for a massive transformation that promises to change the daily lives of millions of commuters. The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has officially invited bids to procure 238 Vande Metro air-conditioned trainsets. This long-awaited step, initiated in early February 2026, aims to replace the older fleet with modern, safer, and faster trains under the MUTP Phase-3 and 3-A projects. The focus is now on delivering a comfortable travel experience comparable to global standards.

What are the features of the new Vande Metro trains?
These new trains are designed to solve many of the problems currently faced by passengers on the Central and Western Railway lines. The Vande Metro rakes will be fully air-conditioned, bringing relief from Mumbai’s heat and humidity. Unlike the current local trains, these will feature a walk-through design with wider gangways, allowing passengers to move easily between coaches.
Safety and comfort have been given top priority in the design specifications. The trains will come with automatic sliding doors to prevent accidental falls and overcrowding near the exits. They will also have advanced air conditioning systems with special filtration to reduce bacteria and viruses. For passenger security, the coaches will be equipped with emergency talk-back systems and CCTV cameras.
Project Timeline and Key Details
The project is moving forward with a clear timeline for delivery and maintenance. The winning technology partner will manufacture these trains in India under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The first prototype is expected to be ready within 30 months (2.5 years) after the contract is awarded. Once the prototype passes all trials, the full fleet will be delivered over the next 4 to 6 years.
To ensure these trains run smoothly for decades, the contract includes a 35-year comprehensive maintenance plan. Two new mega maintenance depots will be constructed at Bhivpuri (Karjat) and Vangaon (Palghar) to service these advanced rakes.
