The ₹24,000 Crore BHEL-Titagarh Partnership
On September 15, 2026, a significant joint venture was formalized between Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL). This 50:50 partnership is valued at approximately ₹24,000 crore.
- Project Scope: The consortium is tasked with the manufacturing, supply, and long-term maintenance of 80 Vande Bharat sleeper train sets.
- 35-Year Commitment: In a massive long-term contract, the maintenance period will span three and a half decades, lasting until approximately 2061.
- Design & Production: While the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai spearheaded the design and development of the Vande Bharat series, other manufacturers like BEML have also secured orders for sleeper versions.
Varanasi to New Delhi: The Next Big Sleeper Launch
As the manufacturing deal moves forward, excitement is building for the launch of the country's second Vande Bharat sleeper train. This highly anticipated service will connect Varanasi and New Delhi, providing a premium link via Prayagraj and Kanpur.
The service is currently awaiting final approval from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) regarding its operational schedules. However, the timeline for commuters is looking clear:
- Trial Runs: Scheduled to take place in September 2026.
- Expected Launch: The train is anticipated to be ready for service by Diwali.
Technical Specifications of the Upcoming Service
Designed for comfort and speed, the upcoming Varanasi-Delhi route will feature a 16-coach configuration capable of carrying approximately 800 passengers. The coach layout is optimized for various travel needs:
- 11 AC three-tier coaches
- 4 AC two-tier coaches
- 1 First-class AC coach
Operating at a maximum speed of 130 km/h, the train is designed to complete the journey in approximately 8 hours, offering a swift and premium alternative to existing long-distance services.
Future Vision: 24-Coach Vande Bharat Giants
The evolution of the Vande Bharat series is set to continue even further. Indian Railways is exploring the introduction of massive 24-coach Vande Bharat sleeper trains. These larger sets are envisioned to feature automated pantry cars and enhanced service management systems, specifically tailored to meet the demands of ultra-long-distance travel.
