₹736 Crore Mega Boost: Indian Railways Fast-Tracks Safety with Kavach 4.0 & Massive Upgrades
Indian Railways is gearing up for a massive technological leap, sanctioning a monumental investment of over ₹736 crore to overhaul its safety protocols and operational infrastructure. This sweeping initiative focuses on deploying cutting-edge signaling, upgrading traction systems, and implementing the indigenous automatic train protection system to ensure a smoother, safer journey for millions.
The Kavach 4.0 Revolution: Eliminating Collision Risks
A cornerstone of this upgrade is the rollout of Kavach 4.0, India's own automatic train protection technology. This system is designed to act as a digital shield, preventing Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD) and automatically applying brakes to mitigate the risk of collisions.
The deployment is set to cover significant stretches across key divisions:
- Lucknow Division (North Eastern Railway): An allocation of ₹252 crore has been approved to implement Kavach 4.0 across 607.7 route kilometers.
- Moradabad Division (Northern Railway): A further ₹170 crore will be utilized to cover 712 route kilometers with this advanced technology.
According to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the long-term vision is ambitious: the entire national rail network is targeted to be covered by this automatic protection network within the next six to seven years.
Modernizing Signaling: From Relays to Computers
To boost reliability and reduce human error, Indian Railways is aggressively moving toward computer-based electronic interlocking. This transition from older relay-based systems is critical for modern, high-speed operations.
Solapur Division Upgrades
Over ₹209 crore has been sanctioned for electronic interlocking systems at several key stations within the Solapur Division. These upgrades will modernize operations at stations including Mohol, Mundhewadi, Bale, Solapur, Hotgi Junction, Hotgi A-Cabin, Shahabad, and Wadi Junction.
This move follows a significant previous project sanctioned on September 1, 2026, which allocated ₹233 crore to replace relay-based signaling across 21 stations in the Samastipur Division.
Infrastructure & Traction: Strengthening the Backbone
Beyond safety electronics, the Railways is investing heavily in the physical and electrical strength of the tracks and crossings.
Traction Upgrades in South Coast Railway
In a move to enhance power efficiency and capacity, ₹142 crore is being directed toward the Savalyapuram-Guntur section (part of the HUN route). This project involves upgrading the electric traction system from 1x25 kV to 2x25 kV, covering 73 route kilometers and 146 track kilometers.
New Four-Lane Road Overbridge
Infrastructure connectivity is also getting a boost with the approval of a four-lane road overbridge on the Udhna-Ukai Songadh section. The project, valued at approximately ₹133
