₹990 Crore Boost: New Rail Lines & Doubling Projects Coming to Maharashtra!
Indian Railways has officially sanctioned two major infrastructure projects in Maharashtra, earmarking a combined investment of ₹990 crore. These developments, covering a total of 49.07 kilometres of track, are designed to resolve existing capacity constraints and enhance connectivity across the state's rail network.
Mumbai Region Expansion: Chouk to Karjat Doubling
The first major undertaking involves the doubling of the 10.86-kilometre Chouk to Karjat section under Central Railway. With a sanctioned budget of ₹497 crore, this project aims to transform a critical link in the Mumbai region that is currently hindered by single-line operations.
Once the doubling is complete, the capacity improvements are expected to yield significant benefits:
- Increased Passenger Services: The route will be able to accommodate five additional passenger trains in each direction every day.
- Freight Growth: The expansion is projected to facilitate the movement of an extra 18.35 million tonnes of freight annually.
Industrial Connectivity: Mukutban to Gadchandur New Line
The second project focuses on a 38.21-kilometre new line connecting Mukutban in the Yavatmal district to Gadchandur in the Chandrapur district. Sanctioned at a cost of ₹493 crore, this line is strategically intended to bolster the industrial and mining sectors by providing a vital alternative to the heavily congested Wardha to Manikgarh route.
According to the Detailed Project Report, the anticipated operational capacity for this new corridor includes:
- Enhanced Freight Movement: An estimated 6.08 million tonnes of freight per annum.
- New Passenger Services: The introduction of two MEMU services in each direction daily.
Project Status and Implementation Requirements
While the financial sanctions are in place, official details regarding construction schedules, commissioning dates, or the current status of land acquisition have not been disclosed. The transition from approval to active execution will depend on several critical milestones, including:
- Completion of extensive design work and utility relocation.
- Obtaining necessary environmental and forest clearances.
- The issuance of tenders and the awarding of contracts.
