Indian Railways has implemented strict new penalty rules for passengers traveling without valid tickets or entering platforms illegally. Under the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act 2026, the minimum fine for ticketless travel has been doubled from 250 rupees to 500 rupees. These revised rules became effective across the country from June 20, 2026.

What are the new fines for ticketless travel and platform entry?

The Railway Board has increased the minimum penalty for passengers caught without a ticket on platforms or inside trains to 500 rupees. If a person is found traveling on someone else’s ticket, that ticket will be seized and a minimum fine of 500 rupees will be charged in addition to the applicable fare. These rules were officially notified by the Ministry of Railways on June 19, 2026, to curb unauthorized travel and protect railway revenue.

What are the penalties for other offenses in railway premises?

The railway authorities have introduced heavy fines for various unauthorized activities to ensure a smooth experience for all passengers. The detailed penalty structure is as follows:

Offense Penalty Amount
Begging or Hawking 2,000 rupees
Smoking on station or train 2,000 rupees
Unauthorized entry in ladies coach 2,500 rupees
Nuisance under influence of alcohol 1,000 rupees
Carrying dangerous goods Up to 10,000 rupees
Wrong parking or violating one-way 500 rupees

Passengers who refuse to pay these fines may be referred to a competent court, which can order recovery of the amount and may impose additional imprisonment up to 6 months or a further fine.
