The Railway Board has approved a revised locomotive production program for the financial year 2026-27 to increase the strength of the Indian Railways fleet. This official program outlines the planned manufacturing of 504 WAP-7 and WAP-7 Amrit Bharat locomotives across major production units. The initiative is aimed at supporting the modernization of passenger services and expanding the Amrit Bharat train network.

How many WAP-7 locomotives will be manufactured in 2026-27?

The Railway Board officially cleared the Revised Locomotives Production Programme 2026-27 on September 16, 2025. Under this plan, a total of 504 WAP-7 type locomotives are scheduled for production. These engines are divided into two categories: the standard WAP-7 and the WAP-7 AD version, which is specifically used for Amrit Bharat trains. This massive production target will ensure that more high-speed passenger trains can be operated across the country.

Breakdown of production targets by manufacturing unit

The manufacturing responsibility is shared between Banaras Locomotive Works in Varanasi and Patiala Locomotive Works to ensure timely delivery. The distribution of these high-power engines is as follows:

Production Unit Locomotive Type Quantity
BLW Varanasi WAP-7 Standard 76
BLW Varanasi WAP-7 Amrit Bharat (AD) 76
PLW Patiala WAP-7 Standard 251
PLW Patiala WAP-7 Amrit Bharat (AD) 101

Apart from this specific program, Banaras Locomotive Works has been set a total target of 642 electric locomotives for the 2026-27 financial year. The successful rollout of these engines is part of the broader plan to support the 50 new Amrit Bharat trains that have been approved for passenger service. The focus remains on technical excellence and meeting the increasing demand for rail travel.
