Indian Railways has introduced a new facility for persons with disabilities. Now, any person holding a valid UDID card can travel in the unreserved Divyangjan coaches of Mail and Express trains. This decision was officially announced on April 20, 2026, to make travel easier for the disabled.
Who can use the Divyangjan coaches?
Passengers who have a valid Unique Disability Identity (UDID) card issued by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities are eligible. These passengers will be considered bona fide travelers if they hold a valid ticket. This facility applies to specific coaches known as SLRD and LSLRD, which are luggage-cum-brake vans with compartments for Divyangjan.
What are the rules for these coaches?
The Railway Board has issued clear guidelines to ensure these coaches are used only by the intended beneficiaries. Sanjay Manocha, Director (Passenger Marketing-2), sent a letter to all Zonal Railways to implement these rules. People traveling in these coaches without a valid UDID card or proper authorization will face strict action under the Railway Act, 1989.
