North Eastern Railway is setting up a new state-of-the-art mechanized laundry at the New Washing Pit in Gorakhpur Junction yard. This facility will ensure that passengers receive clean, germ-free, and fragrant bedrolls. The project is being executed under the directions of General Manager Uday Borwankar to improve passenger amenities.
What is the increase in bedroll capacity?
The current laundry facility prepares 18,000 bedroll packets every day. Once the new mechanized laundry becomes operational by May 31, 2026, this capacity will double to 36,000 packets per day. This upgrade will help the railway maintain better hygiene standards for a larger number of passengers.
How does this fit into the Gorakhpur station redevelopment?
The new laundry is part of a larger redevelopment plan for Gorakhpur Junction costing approximately 498-508.99 crore rupees. To make room for the futuristic multi-modal transport hub, the old laundry near Platform Number 9 will be removed starting June 2026. RICPL is handling the construction on an EPC mode to create world-class infrastructure.
