The South Eastern Railway has ordered the construction of a new waste disposal plant in the Tatanagar railway area. This project will cost over ₹1.38 crore and aims to manage waste from the railway station and residential colonies. The initiative follows an inspection by the National Green Tribunal regarding pollution and environmental safety.

What is the capacity and goal of the new plant?
The plant will manage between 2.5 to 3 tons of waste generated every day. Currently, waste is dumped in pits behind the Central School, which the railway wants to stop. This new facility will ensure better cleanliness and protect the environment in the Tatanagar and Adityapur colony areas.
How will the management and cleaning change?
A new agency will be appointed for a two-year period to handle housekeeping and garbage collection. The railway has also changed which departments handle cleaning to make the process more efficient:
| Area | Old Department | New Department |
|---|---|---|
| Railway Station | Commercial Department | Mechanical Department |
| Railway Colony | Health Department | Engineering Department |
What are the key timelines and official steps?
The South Eastern Zone issued the order for the plant on April 22, 2026. A tender for the operation of the Solid Waste Management (SWM) plant and colony sanitation was published on April 23, 2026, with a bid deadline of May 15, 2026. This move is part of the larger Tatanagar Station redevelopment plan.
