Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia recently inspected the ongoing redevelopment work at Gwalior Railway Station. The project aims to transform the station into a world-class facility for the 22nd century under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The Minister announced that the new station will be ready for passengers within the next 4 to 5 months.

What are the new facilities at Gwalior Railway Station?

The station is being developed like an airport to provide premium services to passengers. It will feature a roof plaza, modern waiting halls, escalators, lifts, and a dedicated food court. The number of platforms will increase from 4 to 6, allowing the station to handle 1.5 lakh passengers every 24 hours. A special concourse design will be used to keep arrival and departure paths separate.

Key project details and timelines

Detail Information
Total Cost Approximately 500 Crore
Tender Value 467.79 Crore (Hyderabad-based company)
Management North Central Railway (Jhansi Division)
Expected Completion August-September 2026
Special Feature Heritage carving where artisans will write their names on stone

Current status and challenges

Work on the station started in December 2022. While the original deadline was December 2024, the progress has been slow. By April 2026, the work was reported to be less than 60% complete. Due to this delay, the Deputy Chief Engineer was transferred in September 2025. Recently, overcrowding during a visit led to a child getting injured, raising concerns about crowd management during the construction phase.
