Agasod-Bina Third Line Open: Faster Delhi-Mumbai Travel

Rail connectivity on the vital Delhi-Mumbai route has received a massive boost with the successful operationalization of the new third rail line between Agasod and Bina. This infrastructure milestone is set to significantly reduce traffic congestion and increase capacity on the critical Delhi-Jhansi-Bina corridor.
First Train Successfully Traverses New Line
The newly constructed section officially entered service on the evening of October 15, 2026, when the Tamil Nadu Sampark Kranti Express (12652) successfully completed its journey on the segment. This successful run follows a series of rigorous technical and safety assessments designed to ensure seamless operations.
Technical Milestones and Speed Trials
The project reached this operational stage following several key technical achievements:
- Electrification: The 25 KV electrical system was successfully completed on October 12, 2026, following an inspection by J.C.S. Bora, Principal Chief Electrical Engineer of the North Central Railway, Prayagraj.
- Speed Testing: A speed trial conducted on the Bina-Agasod segment on October 13, 2026, confirmed that the line is ready for high-speed operations, reaching 120 kilometers per hour.
- Safety Clearance: The safety inspection for this crucial section was overseen by E. Srinivas, the Commissioner of Railway Safety for the Northeast Region.
A Long-Term Infrastructure Investment
This project has been a significant undertaking for the Indian Railways. It traces its origins back to August 24, 2016, when the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the Jhansi-Bina third line. Originally planned as a 152.57-kilometer project with an estimated cost of Rs 2,001.63 crore, the total projected cost has now reached Rs 2,273.84 crore.
As of August 2024, 134 kilometers of the total 153-kilometer project had been commissioned. The project has been guided by the leadership of Aniruddh Kumar, the Divisional Railway Manager for Jhansi, to ensure efficient execution.
The Path to 150 kmph Speeds
The expansion of this corridor is progressing in stages. The third line segment between Dholpur and Jhansi, spanning 162 km, was completed in January 2025, following inspections by Pranajeet Saxena, Commissioner of Railway Safety for the Northeast Circle in Mumbai.
While current operations on the segment are set at 130 kmph, the ultimate goal is even more ambitious. Authorities anticipate that once the third line from Dholpur to Bina is fully completed, it will facilitate train speeds of up to 150 kmph. This will provide enhanced flexibility and efficiency for both passenger and freight transit across North, Central, and South India.
