A simple typographical error while booking your train ticket could cost you thousands of rupees and a major headache. Indian Railways has issued a stern warning to all passengers: providing incorrect age information on your ticket can lead to heavy penalties and significant travel disruptions.

The consequences of these rules were recently highlighted in a Bengaluru incident. A passenger was slapped with a massive fine of Rs 7,035 because his e-ticket incorrectly listed his age as "1" instead of "24."
Despite the passenger's argument that the error was a simple mistake that didn't affect his fare or concession status, railway authorities stood their ground. The penalty was upheld under Section 138 of the Railways Act, 1989. Furthermore, the RailMadad grievance portal closed the complaint, confirming that the Traveling Ticket Examiner (TTE) acted strictly according to official regulations.
How to Correct Your Ticket Details
Many travelers are unaware that once a ticket is booked via the IRCTC platform, passenger details such as age, name, or gender cannot be altered online. If you realize you have made a mistake, you must follow these specific steps:
- Visit a Reservation Counter: You must physically go to a railway reservation counter to request a correction.
- Carry Valid Identification: You must present a printout of your e-ticket along with a valid government-issued ID, such as an Aadhaar card or PAN card.
- Formal Request: Submit your request to the Station Manager or the Chief Reservation Supervisor.
- Observe the Deadline: Minor adjustments can typically be made free of charge, but this must be done at least 24 hours before the train's departure.
Understanding Age-Based Fare Rules
To avoid being flagged by a TTE, it is essential to understand how Indian Railways categorizes passengers for billing:
- Children under 5: They can travel for free, though they do not occupy a separate seat.
- Children aged 5 to 11: They have the option to travel at half-fare without a separate berth, or pay the full fare if they require a berth.
- Passengers aged 12 and above: They are charged the full adult fare.
Strict Warning on Senior Citizen Quotas: Since February 1, 2016, the Railway Board has maintained a zero-tolerance policy regarding the misuse of senior citizen concessions. Any passenger found misrepresenting their age to claim these benefits will be treated as traveling without a valid ticket and will be subject to full penalties.
