Ahmedabad Station: India's First 3-Tier Bullet Train Hub

Indian Railways has reached a historic engineering milestone with the construction of a massive Ahmedabad Bullet Train Hub. This groundbreaking multi-level project integrates the upcoming Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor with existing railway services, creating a seamless connectivity nexus for passengers.

A Three-Tier Transport Revolution

The Ahmedabad station is being redeveloped into a sophisticated three-tier transport system designed to handle different modes of travel simultaneously. This integrated structure ensures that high-speed, conventional, and urban transit systems work in harmony:

  • Upper Level: Dedicated to the high-speed Bullet Train services.
  • Ground Level: Managing conventional express trains, Vande Bharat services, and local passenger trains.
  • Underground Level: Facilitating metro transit operations.

The full integration of these three transport modes is projected to be completed by late 2028.

Safety Inspections and New Platforms

As part of the recent progress, three newly constructed broad-gauge tracks—numbered 16, 17, and 18—along with platforms 10, 11, and 12, have undergone rigorous statutory safety inspections. These platforms are uniquely positioned directly beneath the upcoming elevated bullet train terminal.

E. Srinivas, the Commissioner of Railway Safety for the Western Circle, Mumbai, conducted the inspections. Notably, Platform 10, which had been closed since July 2022 to accommodate extensive construction, is set to return to service.

Ahmedabad Divisional Railway Manager Ved Prakash described the completion of these platforms and broad-gauge lines as a historic milestone in the modernization of Indian Railways, highlighting the complex technical coordination required between disparate rail systems.

Pending final administrative approvals, commercial operations on these new platforms are expected to commence before the Diwali festival.

Expanding Capacity and Bullet Train Progress

Beyond the station hub, significant infrastructure upgrades are underway to bolster regional capacity. This includes comprehensive yard remodeling and the creation of a new broad-gauge bypass line providing Y-connectivity between Asarwa railway station and the Sabarmati 'A' cabin. Additionally, a fifth railway line is being developed between Ahmedabad and the Kankaria depot to strengthen the network.

The 508 km MAHSR corridor, which utilizes technical and financial support from Japan, is moving at a rapid pace. Designed for speeds of up to 320 km/h, the project has currently reached 62% physical completion, with more than 366 km of viaduct girders already installed.
