AI Cleaning Monitoring Hits 5 Superfast Trains!

Indian Railways is leveraging cutting-edge technology to transform passenger hygiene. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has officially deployed an advanced AI cleaning monitoring system across five major superfast trains, including two premium Vande Bharat Express services.
Revolutionizing Onboard Hygiene
This initiative aims to set a new benchmark for cleanliness standards. The AI-powered system provides a comprehensive assessment of various aspects of train maintenance, ensuring that passengers enjoy a sanitary environment throughout their journey.
The technology monitors several key areas, including:
- Coach maintenance and overall cleanliness
- AC window upkeep
- Restroom sanitation and hygiene
- Effective waste management
To ensure complete accountability, the system utilizes digital surveillance, geo-tagged service verification, and real-time staff tracking. It also incorporates star ratings and passenger feedback to maintain high service standards.
The Two-Hour Complaint Rule
In a major move to improve passenger satisfaction, the NFR has implemented a strict grievance redressal window. Any cleanliness-related complaint must be resolved within two hours. If the target is not met, the issue is automatically escalated to senior railway officials for immediate action.
Passengers can continue to voice their concerns via the Rail Madad app or by calling the 139 helpline.
Which Trains are Included?
The rollout, which began in mid-October 2026, includes the following superfast services:
- New Jalpaiguri–Patna Vande Bharat Express
- New Jalpaiguri–Guwahati Vande Bharat Express
- Kamakhya–SMVT Bengaluru Express
- Guwahati–Kolkata Garib Rath Express
- Dibrugarh–Mumbai LTT Express
Wider AI Initiatives in Indian Railways
The deployment of AI cleaning monitoring is part of a broader technological push by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS). Other ongoing AI-driven projects include:
- AI-Based Laundry: Testing of automated laundry systems using CCTV, barcodes, and RFID tags is underway in the Pune, Jaipur, and Jodhpur divisions.
- Vande Bharat Maintenance Hub: A massive 307-crore rupee maintenance facility is being developed in Ahmedabad to handle heavy repairs and overhauls for the Vande Bharat fleet.
