Ajmer TTEs to Get Body-Worn Cameras for Transparency

The North Western Railway is taking a major step toward modernizing its ticket-checking operations. In a significant move to enhance transparency and accountability, the Ajmer Rail Division has announced that Ticket Examiners (TTEs) will soon be equipped with body-worn cameras.
This initiative is designed to provide an objective record of interactions between railway staff and passengers. By capturing both audio and video, these devices will serve as vital evidence in the event of passenger disputes or allegations of misconduct, ensuring that both the commuters and the railway officials are held to a high standard of conduct.
First Phase Deployment Ahead of Urs Fair
The Ajmer Division is leading this technological rollout, having already procured 40 cameras in its initial phase. The deployment is being fast-tracked to ensure readiness ahead of the upcoming Urs fair, where passenger volumes are expected to surge. To ensure continuous monitoring, these advanced cameras are equipped with night vision functionality, allowing TTEs to maintain surveillance even during late-night journeys.
Beyond resolving disputes, the use of these cameras is part of a broader strategy to:
- Curb unauthorized travel on trains.
- Improve the overall accountability of the ticket-checking staff.
- Provide digital oversight of on-board operations.
A National Shift Toward Digitized Oversight
The implementation in Ajmer is not an isolated event but part of a larger, long-term Indian Railways strategy to integrate digital surveillance across various zones. Several other divisions are already making significant progress in this direction.
In the West Central Railway, the Bhopal Division has placed orders for 56 cameras. According to officials, these are expected to be operational within the next two to three months, addressing a need for enhanced surveillance that has been identified over the last two years.
Other notable developments include:
- North Central Railway: The Prayagraj Division launched a pilot project in July 2026, testing the technology on the Prayagraj Express and Shramshakti Express.
- Western Railway: This zone has introduced new uniforms that feature integrated cameras for seamless monitoring.
- Other Divisions: Progress is also being seen in the Raipur, Northern, North Eastern, and Danapur divisions.
As Indian Railways continues to digitize its networks, these body-worn cameras represent a significant leap toward creating a safer, more transparent, and more disciplined environment for millions of passengers across the country.
