Akola Tapadiya Nagar Overbridge Work Speeds Up After 8-Year Delay

The long-awaited construction of the New Tapadiya Nagar Railway Overbridge in Akola has finally entered a high-speed phase. After facing an agonizing eight-year delay, work at Railway Gate No. 38 is now being carried out on a war footing to solve the city's persistent traffic congestion and public frustration.

The sudden push in construction follows intense legal scrutiny at the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Advocate Narendra Belsare played a crucial role in bringing the project's stagnation to light. During recent court proceedings, the Public Works Department (PWD) confirmed that ₹24 crore has already been provided to the Railway administration to facilitate the bridge's construction.

Complex Engineering Over Four Lines

This project presents significant engineering challenges due to the scale of the infrastructure. The bridge is being built to span across four railway lines, requiring seamless coordination between two different zones:

  • Two lines under the jurisdiction of Central Railway.
  • Two lines under the jurisdiction of South Central Railway.

Six-Day Gate Closure for Integration

To allow for accelerated integration work, officials have announced that the railway gate will remain closed for a period of six days. This temporary measure is intended to speed up the technical connection between the new structure and the existing railway network.

Target Completion: January 2027

MLA Randhir Savarkar, who has been actively monitoring the progress of the project, is pushing for a swift conclusion. He has expressed expectations that the bridge will be fully completed and opened for public use by January 2027.
