Aligarh Station Makeover: Budget Skyrockets to ₹800 Crore

The Aligarh Railway Station redevelopment is set to undergo a massive transformation that will redefine travel in the region. Originally estimated to cost between ₹400 crore and ₹450 crore, the budget for this ambitious project has now been increased to a whopping ₹800 crore under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

According to Deepak Kumar Bhardwaj, Deputy CPM of the Prayagraj Mandal, project planning has been in progress for approximately 18 months, involving close coordination with District Magistrate Vishakha G. The initiative, overseen by Indian Railways and the Northern Railway division, aims to turn the station into a world-class facility, offering amenities that rival modern airports.

Preserving the 158-Year-Old Heritage

In a significant shift from the initial proposals, the redevelopment will no longer involve the demolition of the historic station building. The 158-year-old British-era structure, which spans approximately three acres, will be preserved and maintained as a heritage site.

This decision has necessitated major architectural adjustments. The new design for the multi-story facility must now integrate seamlessly with the existing heritage structure, which includes a substantial 7,900-square-meter area on the side of platform one.

Airport-Style Amenities and Commercial Hub

Passengers can look forward to a futuristic experience once the project is complete. The modernized station is planned to include several high-end features:

  • VIP Lounges for premium travelers.
  • Gaming Zones and advanced waiting areas.
  • Enhanced facilities for both passengers and railway staff.

Beyond transit, the station is envisioned as a commercial powerhouse. The integration of commercial spaces could bring several high-end amenities to the vicinity, such as shopping malls, cinemas, five-star hotels, cafeterias, and even a super-specialty hospital.

Solving Traffic and Connectivity Issues

To manage the expected influx of visitors and reduce congestion, the project includes strategic infrastructural upgrades. New, separate entry gates will be constructed for the Railway Road and Center Point sides. Additionally, dedicated pick-up and drop-off zones will be established to streamline movement.
